Mao Family Ancestral Temple


Mao Family Ancestral Temple is the general ancestral hall of Shaoshan Mao family. It is located at the foot of the 18th Arhat Mountain in Shaoshan Village, Shaoshan City, Xiangtan City, Hunan Province. Started to build in the 23rd year of Qianlong's reign (1758) of the Qing Dynasty , it was completed  in 1763. It is a brick and wood structure with a construction area of about 668.8 square meters.

The ancestral hall houses are divided into three sections. The first entrance is the theater. In the middle of the pavilion is a stage, which can accommodate dozens of people to perform and celebrate on stage. On both sides of the building are dressing rooms. There is a small hall in the middle downstairs. There are two side rooms on each side, with the kitchen on the left and the dining room on the right. The second entrance is the central hall. The bell hangs on the right corridor, and the drum hangs on the left corridor. It is a place for the entire clan to work, hold meetings, offer sacrifices, and hold banquets and banquets. The third entrance is the "Dunben Hall", where the ancestral deity tablets of various dynasties are placed. On the left side of the hall is the accommodation area, and on the right side of the hall is the collection area for items such as Qian Gu and sacrificial vessels.

In 1993, the Mao Family Ancestral Hall in Shaoshan added an exhibition on Mao Zedong's family history, which describes the origins of the Mao family and the revolutionary deeds of Mao Zedong's relatives. It is an important place to understand Chairman Mao's historical activities. ‌‌
