The Silk Road refers to a land commercial route that originated in ancient China's Chang'an (Xi'an) or Luoyang to pass through Gansu Xinjiang, Central & West Asia, and then reach Europe and various countries around Mediterranean.

The Silk Road started from the capitals of various dynasties in ancient China. During the Western Han Dynasty, its starting point was in Chang'an. During the Eastern Han Dynasty, its starting point was in Luoyang, during which the Silk Road extended to Europe for the first time. The Wei, Jin, Southern and Northern Dynasties had multiple starting points, including Luoyang, Chang'an, Pingcheng, Yecheng, and Jiankang. During the Sui and Tang dynasties, the starting point was the Western Market of the Tang Dynasty, Kaiyuanmen, and Luoyang City. During the Northern Song Dynasty, Kaifeng was the starting point of the Silk Road.

The initial purpose of the Silk Road was to transport silk produced in ancient China. In 1877, German geologist Ferdinand von Richthofen named the "Silk Road" in his book "China", which was a transportation route between China and Central Asia, as well as between China and India, using silk trade as a medium from 114 BC to 127 AD. This term was quickly accepted by the academic community and the publi.  And then it was officially used.

On June 22, 2014, the eastern section of the overland Silk Road, "Silk Road: The Road Network of Chang'an Tianshan Corridor," jointly declared by China, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan, was successfully declared a World Cultural Heritage site. It became the first project to successfully apply for World Heritage status through cross-border cooperation.
