Yellow Dragon Cave


Yellow Dragon Cave, also known as Huanglong Cave, as well as 黄龙洞 huáng lóng dòng in Chinese, is a typical karst landform cave, which is located in the eastern end of Wulingyuan National Scenic Area of  Zhangjiajie City. With its huge three-dimensional cave space, rich karst cave landscape, and sightseeing routes with both water and land, the Yellow Dragon Cave was selected as the "Most Beautiful Tourist Karst Cave in China" in 2005.


What to see in the Yellow Dragon Cave?

Crossed the Suoxi Bridge, you will see the Pastoral Scenery Ecological Square and the New Ethnic Music  Hall of the Show "Misty Rain in Zhangjiajie". After 10 minutes walking, you will see the entrance of the cave. Following your tour guide, you can know more about the mysterious cave during your two hours visiting inside the cave.

Xiangshui River 

With a total length of 2800 meters, an average depth of 6 meters, and a maximum depth of 12 meters, Xiangshui River, also known as "Sounds Water River",  is one of the three underground rivers in the Yellow Dragon Cave. Located on the second floor of the cave, the Xiangshui River has been operating boat cruise with 9 minutes riding on the section of 800 meters long underdound riverr. In 1992, when Lukas, an expert of the United Nations World Natural Heritage, visited the Xiangshui River, he praised: "Yellow Dragon Cave is the most beautiful cave that i have ever seen, and it's amazing how beautiful the Underground River is!


Stone Fields

After get off the boat and walk up steps along the path on the slope , you will see countless of "stone fields" which are calcium carbonate deposit formed during the horizontal flow of water at the bottom of the cave. And they look like spectacular pastoral scenery.

Dragon Palace

The Dragon Palace is the largest and oldest hall in Yellow Dragon Cave. Formed 200000 years ago, it has an average height of 40 meters and a floor area of 14000 square meters. The Dragon Palace is also the hall with the most developed stalagmites in the cave. There are more than 1705 stalagmites and stone pillars in the hall, including 516 stalagmites with a height of more than 1 meter. The number and distribution density of stalagmites are relatively rare in the open karst caves in China. The characteristic landscape "Sacred Needle for Stabilizing the Sea", "Dragon King's Throne" and "Ten Thousand Years Cedar" are known as the three wonders of the Dragon Palace, of which "Sacred Needle for Stabilizing the Sea" is the landmark of Huanglong Cave Scenic Area.

Sacred Needle for Stabilizing the Sea

The stalagmite of " Sacred Needle for Stabilizing the Sea" is the most famous wonder of the Dragon Palace. With its height of 19.2 meters, it is the highest stalagmite in Yellow Dragon Cave, and it is also a landmark of Yellow Dragon Cave Scenic Spot. Formed 200000 years ago,it is thick at both ends and thin in the middle, growing on slopes. Being exceptionally spectacular and magical, it can be called the "treasure of the cave". The stalagmite known as "sacred Needle for Stabilizing the Sea" is unique in China. In 1998, it was insured for a huge sum CNY 100 million,which is indeed a miracle of Zhangjiajie's subterranean world.


However, Yellow Dragon Cave is just like an underground "magical palace", featuring a wide cave, deep and secluded underground rivers, hanging waterfalls and dense stone bamboo shoots, and showing a style of its own. Yellow Dragon Cave is more beautiful than the outside world. The cave is of good beneficial air circulation, and is cool in the summer and war in the winter. Yellow Dragon Cave is one of the foremost scenic areas in Zhangjiajie. Also it has been honored as magical karst cave both in China and in the world.
