Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon


Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon is located in Sanguansi Township, Cili County, Zhangjiajie City. It is a famous tourist attraction that combines mountains, streams, caves, and canyons, which has all the scenery of subtropical Karst. In this canyon, the trees are lush, and birds are singing and flowers are fragrant. Walking along the midstream of the valley, you can see that the waterfalls and springs here are everywhere, making people dizzy. Opened to tourists in 2007,  Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon was rated as a National 5A Scenic Area in 2011.

What to see in Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon?

Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon not only boasts beautiful natural scenery, but also historical and cultural landscapes. For example, the Ancient Battlefield of "Thousand People's Grave", which recorded the bitter battle between Li Zicheng and Wu Sangui in the late Ming and early Qing dynasties(1644-1664), the Bandit Cave which reflected the historical characteristics of western Hunan in the 1950s, and the "Southern Red Flag Canal", which was witnessed the people of western Hunan digging among the cliffs by relying on heaven's labor in the 1970s. ·In addition, the Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon completed the world's highest elevation and longest span glass bridge in 2016· Standing on a glass bridge, you can have a panoramic view of the valley floor scenery 400 meters below your feet. A Line of Sky

A Line of Sky, also known as " Yi xian tian 一线天 in Chinese" ,  is the natural entrance of the Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon. It is both like a line of sky and like a door. However, this door is very high but it is very narrow. Come on, this door is opening to welcome you to create an experience the wonders of the Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon from zero distance.  The length of the walkway here is about 700 meters, with a vertical elevation difference of over 300 meters, also 1680 steps of the stone-stair. Tourists can carefully walk down the steep steps until they reach the next attraction: the Grand Canyon Slide.

Nokley Slide

The Nokley slide, built between the Yixiantian, the southern Red Flag Canal and the Valley Bottom Plank Road, is divided into two sections, with a total length of more than 600 meters. The chute is 45 cm wide and 50 cm deep. It is built with granite and then finely polished. The slide was completedand opened to tourists in March 2007.  Passed the site of Yixian tian, tourists can have an experience the thrill of the slide from here. It takes only 6 minutes to slide to the bottom of the valley, which is both labor-saving and fast transportation.

Holy Spring Creek 

Holy Spring Creek is also so known as  Rotten Boat Creek. It is very surprising that there are small boats sailing in the stream at an altitude of 400 meters. With a total length of 7.5km, the Holy Spring Stream runs together with the South Red-flag Canal through the secluded valley. On the both sides of the stream, the steep cliffs are towering, and you can see waterfalls hanging on the deep cliffs. Here, the forest is lush, wild flowers grow in abundance,  birds singing and flowers fragrant, which makes  mountains and rivers complement each other. 


Rainbow Lake

After arriving at the bottom of the valley, tourists will get to the Railbow Square. Nearby, there is a crystal lake with a total water area of 10 acres. As you know, this is the Raibow Lake where there are some boats on the water. And you can take a boat tour about 20 minutes on the lake. From the cruise boat, you can see the South Red Flag Canal runing on the high cliff, which was built by local villagers to irrigate farmland in the 1970s. Now, the water flows out from the Red Flag Canal, and a waterfall hangs on the cliff, which is very spectacular. And this waterfall is called Tianhe Waterfall by local people.

Tianhe Waterfall 

Tianhe Waterfall means the water of the waterfall comes from the sky. From here, the waterfall looks like suddenly gushing out from a cliff in the mountain, without seeing the water source. The waterfall has a large water volume and a high drop. The water flows into the Holy Spring Creek to form airflow and mist. If it is sun, the water droplets in the air move with the wind, and as long as there is sunlight, a rainbow will appear. You can take photos here or approach the waterfall to feel the coolness of the waterfall rain. but you  need to keep safe and not fall into the creek. Tianhe Waterfall is the first waterfall we see in the Grand Canyon, with many waterfalls of all sizes on your next going.

Grand Canyon Elevator 

The Grand Canyon Elevator is divided into two sections, namely the sightseeing elevator and the treasure hunting elevator. The sightseeing elevator is built vertically from the cliff on the top of Wuwangpo Mountain, with a height of 110 meters. The treasure hunting elevator is located at the lower end, with a height of 120 meters. Tourists take the elevator to get on and off. Today, we take the elevator from the bottom of the valley to the top of Wuwangpo Mountain, and then walk along the glass walkway to the Zhangjiajie Glass Bridge.

Glass Bottom Bridge

Zhangjiajie Glass Bridge, opend on August 1,2016, has gained another name of Yuntian Du, meaning the way for people under heaven. The dizzying footbridge spans two cliffs in the scenic area of Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon. Stretching 430 meters ong and 6 meters wide, hovering over a 300-meter vertical drop, Zhangjiajie Glass Bridge is the highest and longest glass-bottomed bridge in the world....More


More Attractions of Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon

If you are a hiker for liking adventure tours, you can choose the tour route B2,which attractions includes the Glass Bridge, the Glass Skywalk, thereafter you need to reach the bottom of the valley. And then you will have  2-3 hours hiking along the path built in the valley. Of course, you can also see more attractions of Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon, which are listed as following.


Tianxuan Plank Road

 Built on the cliff of Wuwangpo Mountain, the Tianxuan Plank Road, also known as the Sky Hanging Plank Road, has a total length of 1300 meters from the top to the bottom of the valley, including 60 meters of glass walkway. The widest part of this plank road is 2 meters, and the narrowest part is only 0.9 meters.

Three options for tourists to reach the bottom of the valley from the glass bridge: 

  • Walk down along the sky hanging plank road.

  • Pay an additional 35 yuan per person to take the elevator down to the bottom of the valley.

  • Pay an additional 90 yuan per person to take the air rope slide to the front of the Yixiantian ( A Line of Sky), and then pay an additional 50 yuan per person to take the slide down.


South Red Flag Canal 

The South Red-flag Canal is one of wonders of Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon. Built on the deep cliffs, the water of the canal comes from the Holy Spring on the upper section of the grand canyon. Meandering  on the cliffs with a total length of more than 10 kilometers, the canal is regarded as the artificial  canal in south China. In the 1960s and 1970s, under the socialist system, more than 20000 people in the Sanguansi People's commune worked together to build this canal. Compared with the Red Flag Canal in Linxian County of Henan Province, this artificial canal built in Hunan Province of China, was later called the Southern Red Flag Canal. Nowadays, this canal is not only used to irrigate tens of thousands of acres of farmland in Sanguansi Township, but also as a drinking water source for tens of thousands of people around Sanguansi Township.


A Curtain of Dreams

In fact, it is a half round curtain-like waterfall. In Shenquan Gorge, there are two waterfalls like that. One of them is particularly unique. This curtain-like waterfall is very large,which is formed by the rock cover extending from the opposite side of the stream.  It is very secluded and long, just like a long dream, hence its name. Here, you can take photos freely.


Holy Spring Lake

With a water area of 200 acres, the Holy Spring Lake (also known as Shenquan Lake) is prased as a poetic place. The water in this lake mainly comes from streams, groundwater, and rainwater. Here, the lake is so clean and clear that it looks like a mirror. And the scenery of the lake and mountains is breathtaking. In the lake, there are all kinds of freshwater fish, as well as giant salamander which is the national second-class protected animal. Arriving at Shenquan Lake, we will take a boat to admire the beautiful scenery of Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon. In about 20 minutes cruise, we will disembark and end our unforgettable journey to the Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon.
