Beijing Overview


Beijing, abbreviated as "Jing" and formerly known as Yanjing or Beiping, is the capital, municipality, national central city, and mega city of the People's Republic of China. It has been approved by the State Council as China's political center, cultural center, international exchange center, and technological innovation center, and is one of China's historical and cultural cities and ancient capitals. It is also a world-class city.

Beijing has 16 districts under its jurisdiction, with a total area of 16410.54 square kilometers. At the end of 2022, the permanent population of Beijing was 21.843 million.

Beijing is located in the north of China and the north of North China Plain, adjacent to Tianjin in the east and Hebei Province in the rest. It is a world famous ancient capital and modern international city.

The terrain of Beijing is high in the northwest and low in the southeast. The west, north, and northeast are surrounded by mountains on three sides, while the southeast is a gently sloping plain towards the Bohai Sea. The main rivers flowing through the territory include Yongding River, Chaobai River, North Canal, Juma River, etc. The climate of Beijing is a warm temperate semi humid and semi-arid monsoon climate, with high temperatures and rainy summers, cold and dry winters, and short spring and autumn.

Beijing has been rated as a world first tier city by the World Urban Research Institute GAWC, and the United Nations report points out that Beijing ranks second in China's human development index. In 2008, Beijing successfully hosted the Summer Olympics, and in 2022, Beijing also successfully hosted the Winter Olympics, making it the world's first "Double Olympics City".
