Huangluo Yao Village


Huangluo Yao Village is located within the Longji Scenic Area, with the Jinjiang River passing through the village and beautiful scenery. This place is home to the unique Red Yao ethnic group. Huangluo Yao Village is home to over 300 Red Yao people, who have set a Guinness World Record for having over 60 women with hair over 1.4 meters tall. Since ancient times, the Red Yao women have had a traditional habit of growing long hair. Their long hair, singing and dancing, and Red Yao clothing have all become beautiful folk landscapes here.

Huangluo Yao Village is located in the bank of Jinsha River, on the bottom of Zhuang Village, all the house are build base on the river bank, and made of pine wood.

The villagers of Huangluo Yao Village are all good at singing and dancing, and are warm and hospitable. Tourists arrived at Huangluo Yao Village, where Yao girls dressed in colorful ethnic costumes lined up to welcome them, singing sweet mountain songs and offering their unique dances and traditional sports, as well as fragrant oil tea.

The music and dance programs that can be enjoyed include long hair performances, red stick dances, umbrella dances, etc. If you prefer quietness, sometimes long haired Red Yao girls gather by the Jinjiang River to wash their hair together, giving people a natural and beautiful visual experience.

In the hearts of Red Yao women, long hair carries the meaning of "long, long-lasting, prosperous and developed". It is said that they only cut their hair twice in their lifetime, once during the hundred days of infancy, and once during the coming of age ceremony at the age of eighteen. After they get married and have children, they will wear a hairpin symbolizing children in their hair.

Yao nationality is distributed in six provinces but the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region contains the largest population of the Yao people. They have their own language but most would also speak mandarin. Their origins date to the Qin Dynasty. There are several sub-groups within the Yao nationality. Yao people are distinctive by their colorful national dress and often the women will have extremely long hair which is coiled up on top of their head.

Yao People’s costume is so colorful. The women of Yao are different in two, some of them wear short jacket with no collar in upper body, but others are in long coat. In some area three arc silver hairpins is decorated on head, which sometimes weigh half a kilogram. The Yao Minority in this village has special features, the ladies all dress-up in red, they roll it up the long hair on the head, the longer hair means more pretty, and they use the rice water washing the hair to keep it black and healthy.
