Xian Overview
Xi'an City, formerly known as Chang'an and Haojing, is a prefecture level city under the jurisdiction of Shaanxi Province.It is the capital of Shaanxi Province, a sub provincial city, a mega city, and a national central city. It located in the northwest of the People's Republic of China, in the central part of the Guanzhong Plain, bordering the Wei River to the north and the Qinling Mountains to the south. As of 2023, the city has 11 districts and 2 counties under its jurisdiction, with a total area of 10108 square kilometers. As of the end of 2023, the permanent population of Xi'an City was 13.0782 million.
The Qinling Mountains and the Weihe Plain in Xi'an have a clear boundary, forming the main landform of Xi'an city. It is a warm temperate semi humid continental monsoon climate with distinct seasons of cold, warm, dry, and wet.Xi'an is a world-renowned historical and cultural city, where 13 dynasties including the Western Zhou, Qin, Western Han, Sui, and Tang established their capitals. It is also the capital of peasant uprising regimes such as Red Eyebrow, Green Forest, Da Qi (Huang Chao), and Da Shun (Li Zicheng).It was the administrative center of the local military and political organs, including the government, army, road, and province, as well as the counties of Chang'an and Xianning. The ancient Silk Road started from Chang'an. In the Yuan Dynasty, Anxi Road was established (later renamed Fengyuan Road), and in the second year of Ming Hongwu (1369), Xi'an Prefecture was established, hence the name Xi'an.
Xi'an is the core city of the Xi'an metropolitan area and the Guanzhong Plain urban agglomeration. It has been approved by the State Council as an important central city in western China and an important national base for scientific research, education, and industry.There are eight heritage sites listed in the The World Heritage List, namely the the Mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor and the Terra Cotta Warriors, the Big Wild Goose Pagoda, the Little Wild Goose Pagoda, the Daming Palace site of Chang'an City in the Tang Dynasty, the Weiyang Palace site of Chang'an City in the Han Dynasty, and the Xingjiao Temple tower.There are also scenic spots such as Xi'an City Wall, Bell and Drum Tower, Huaqing Pool, Zhongnan Mountain, Tang Dynasty Furong Garden, Shaanxi History Museum, and Beilin. Xi'an has seven "Double First Class" universities, including Xi'an Jiaotong University, Northwestern Polytechnical University, and Xi'an University of Electronic Science and Technology.
