Chengdu is located in the subtropical monsoon climate zone, with abundant heat and rainfall, distinct four seasons, and simultaneous rain and heat. Except for some mountainous areas on the northwest edge, most areas of Chengdu exhibit the following climate characteristics: no scorching heat in summer, less ice and snow in winter, mild climate, long summer and short winter, long frost free period, more autumn and night rain, low wind speed, high humidity, more clouds and fog, and less sunshine.

The total annual precipitation in Chengdu was 734.8~1142.3 millimeters. The overall precipitation is relatively high. The average annual sunshine hours in Chengdu are 843.9 to 1406.2 hours.
When to visit Chengdu?
The best time to pay a visit is from March to June with pleasant spring weather. September to November with the coolness of autumn is also a right time. The rainy season is usually in July and August, with occasional storms.
Travel Chengdu in Spring( Feb-May)
Spring weather in Chengdu often begins early from the end of February and lasts until early May. As the temperature rises, colorful flowers are blooming one after another, and trees and grass are turning green under the spring wind. It’s the best time to see the peach blossom at Longquan Mountain, the pear blossom at Xinjin County, the peony at Danjing Mountain, and the cuckoo at Wawu Mountain. There is a flower fair held at the Bronze Goat Taoist Temple on 25th of January in the Chinese lunar calendar every year. Take a thin sweater, a long-sleeved T-shirt and a jacket with you to visit the city at this time.
Travel Chengdu in Summer(Jun-Aug)
Summer here is both hot and rainy, from mid-May to early the end of August. Besides shorts, a thin overcoat and rain gear are also necessary for a summer tour. In this season, the weather is somewhat unpleasant because of the high humidity although the temperature is usually lower than 35 C (95 F). Mount Qincheng, and Jiuzhaigou Valley are ideal places close to the city for escaping the summer heat.
Travel Chengdu in Autaumn (Sep-Nov)
Autumn usually starts from September and lasts till the end of October or early November. The temperature drops quickly, and there may be a lot of rain. You’d better take long-sleeved T-shirts and thin overcoats plus a thin sweater. Kalong Valley, Sanjiang and Miyaluo at this time are covered with red maple and yellow chrysanthemum, beautiful and magnificent.Qingcheng Mountain, Leshan Giant Buddha, Jiuzhaigou Valley also come to its fairest season of the year.
Travel Chengdu in Winter (Dec-Feb)
The average temperature in winter from November to mid-February is about 5 C (41 F). However, due to the clouds and moist weather, it feels very cold. You have to wear woollens, down jackets and warm winter boots to spend a winter holiday there. Xiling Snow Mountain and Longchi National Forest Park are good places for skiing, while the plum blossom in Tazishan Park and Meilin Park is also attractive.
