The Origin Name of Beijing

Beijing is an ancient capital with a history of more than 3000 years, with different titles in different dynasties, roughly totaling more than 20 nicknames.

Yandu, according to historical records, in 1045 BC, after King Wu of Zhou destroyed Shang, he was granted the title of Duke Zhao in Yandu. Yandu is named after being the capital of Yan in ancient times. Among the Seven Heroes of the Warring States period, there was the Yan State, which is said to have been named after its proximity to the Yan Mountains. Its capital was called the "Yan Capital".

Youzhou, one of the ancient Kyushu states. The name of Youzhou was first seen in the "Book of Shangshu Shun Dian": "Yan called Youzhou." Youzhou was once established in the Han, Wei, Jin, and Tang dynasties, all of which were located in the area of Beijing.

Jingcheng (京城) refers to the capital of a country, and after Beijing became the Jingchen, it was often referred to as the capital.

In the first year of Emperor Taizong's reign in Nanjing (938 AD), the original Youzhou was upgraded to the Youdu Prefecture and renamed Nanjing, also known as Yanjing, as the capital of Liao. At that time, the capital of Liao was in Shangjing.

Dadu, a new city rebuilt in the Yuan Dynasty centered around the Jin Dynasty's Li Palace and now Beihai Park, was renamed Dadu in the ninth year of Kublai Khan's Zhiyuan era (1272), commonly known as the Yuan Dadu.

Beiping, in the first year of the Hongwu reign of the Ming Dynasty (1368), after Zhu Yuanzhang destroyed the Yuan Dynasty, in order to record the achievements of pacifying the north, he renamed the capital of the Yuan Dynasty as Beiping.

Beijing, in the first year of the Yongle reign of the Ming Dynasty (1403), after Zhu Di took the throne, he changed his fiefdom of Beiping Prefecture to Shuntian Prefecture, built the Beijing City, and prepared to relocate the capital here. This was the beginning of officially naming Beijing, which has a history of over 600 years.

In the 18th year of the Yongle reign (1420), the capital of Beijing was relocated and renamed as the capital until the Qing Dynasty.

Jingzhao, the Republic of China abolished Shuntian Prefecture and established Jingzhao Prefecture, directly under the central government. Its scope included most of Beijing. In 1928, Jingzhao Prefecture was abolished and Beijing was renamed Beiping. On Oct 1st, 1949, after foundation of People's Republic of China, Beiping was renamed Bejing as the country's capital.
