Mengshan Great Buddha

Mengshan Great Buddha, also known as Xishan Great Buddha, is located in Mengshan, about 20 kilometers southwest of Taiyuan City, Shanxi Province. The Great Buddha of Mengshan was excavated during the Tianbao period of the Northern Qi Dynasty. It was originally a cliff Buddha statue after the Kaihua Temple in Mengshan. At the end of the Yuan Dynasty, the Great Buddha of Mengshan was destroyed. The Buddha was rediscovered in 1980, but the Buddha's head is now unknown. The head of the current Buddha statue was newly chiseled by later generations.

The height from the bottom of the legs to the neck of the Mengshan Giant Buddha is about 30 meters. Calculated proportionally, including the height of the Buddha's head, the original height of the Buddha was about 46 meters. On the platform in front of the Giant Buddha, there are architectural relics with a width of three rooms. The gate pier stone and floor tie-beam are still there. There is a turtle shaped mound to the north of the ruins, and the monument has been lost. There are several small stone holes on the west wall of the Buddhist niche, which were used to embed beams and rafters during the construction of the Buddhist pavilion. On the east side of the Buddha niche, there is also a cliff inscription and the remains of two caves on the cliff surface.
