On July 31st, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) officially announced that the Zhangjiajie Giant Salamander National Nature Reserve in Hunan Province has been included in the IUCN Green List. This marks the international recognition of the efforts made by the Giant Salamander Conservation Area in biodiversity conservation, ecosystem management, and other aspects.
The Giant Salamander Nature Reserve is the first and largest national level nature reserve in China with giant salamanders as the main protected object. It involves 745 rivers in the Lishui and Yuanshui river basins, covering 76.5% of the water area in Zhangjiajie City. It is located in the Wuling Mountain Biodiversity Conservation Priority Zone and is an important water source and ecological barrier in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River. It is of great significance for maintaining regional biodiversity and protecting the ecological environment.
In recent years, with the continuous adherence to the Zhangjiajie Giant Salamander National Nature Reserve in Hunan Province, significant conservation achievements have been made and highlights have emerged.
The protection of giant salamanders has achieved significant results. The wild resources of the flagship species, giant salamanders, have reached 13800, and the emergence points of giant salamanders have been successfully restored to 10. The breakthrough ecological breeding technology has won 3 national patents, and has protected 5 genetic purebred species including Chinese giant salamanders and South China giant salamanders.
In the future, the Zhangjiajie Giant Salamander National Nature Reserve in Hunan Province will rely on the IUCN international platform and always adhere to the green protection concept of prioritizing ecological protection and sharing the ecological environment. It will continue to explore and innovate in areas such as ecological protection and restoration, rare and endangered species protection, scientific research and monitoring, and community co construction and management, effectively promoting the organic integration of ecological protection, green development, and people's livelihood improvement.
