Dongchuan Red Land Scenic Area is located in Dongchuan District, northeast of Kunming City. Due to the high content of iron and aluminum in the soil here, a dazzling red color is formed. The land there is divided into blocks of land by fields and crops, and from a distance, it is colorful, complemented by blue skies and white clouds, making it even more spectacular. In recent years, Dongchuan Red Land Scenic Area has gradually become a paradise for photography enthusiasts.
The Scenic Area is divided into three tour routes as below:
Northwest Route
The scenic spots from south to north include Langdi Di, Jinxiu Garden, Qicai Slope, and Damakan. The Langdi land is located west of Sanchakou, with layers of terraced fields resembling rolling waves, hence its name. Colorful Slope and Jinxiu Garden are actually the same piece of land, but viewing them from different angles can bring different visual impacts. Due to the cultivation of large crops such as potatoes and buckwheat, the colorful and spectacular flowering season is quite impressive. Damakan is located in the northern part of the northwest line and is a suitable place to capture the sunrise.
Northeast Route
Along the way from south to north, there are attractions such as Dapingtang, Laolongshu, Dongguawan, Luoxiagou, and Yueliangtian. The Old Dragon Tree is a thousand year old fir tree, standing alone on the red soil, ancient and weathered. Every May when the terraced fields release water and plant seedlings, the lines of Luoxia Gully resemble a pipa, and it is also one of the good locations for shooting the sunset and sunset in the evening. The Moon Field is about 20 kilometers away from Huashitou Village, where terraced fields and canyon landscapes are combined, creating a rich and diverse landscape. It is a beloved place for many photography enthusiasts to produce large photos.
South Route
The southern route is a road leading to Kunming, with scenic spots such as Yueshuo, Dawotang, and Dayakou on both sides. The music score is only a little over a kilometer away from Huashitou Village, with layers of almost horizontal terraced fields resembling colorful sheet music. The farmers working in the fields are embellished with notes, lifelike.
There are several good times to visit red soil: during the wheat ripening period from April to May each year, when buckwheat and rapeseed flowers grow vigorously from September to December, and when there is occasional residual snow in the fields from February to March.
