Lhasa Transportation


As of the end of 2022, the total length of rural roads (excluding national and provincial roads) in Lhasa has reached 5312.4 kilometers. The total length of bus operating routes is 1057 kilometers, and the annual passenger volume of buses is 44.704 million.  

Highway

In 2016, the highest altitude ring road in China was built in Lhasa, surrounding the city with a total length of nearly 100 kilometers. The road has 7 tunnels, 27 bridges, and spans the Qinghai Tibet Railway. In 2019, the Bangga Tunnel and Liudong Bridge were completed and opened to traffic.

Lhasa Gongga Airport is located in Jiazhulin Town, Gongga County, Shannan City, Xizang Autonomous Region, and on the south bank of the magnificent the Yarlung Zangbo River. With an altitude of 3600 meters, the runway is 4000 meters long and 45 meters wide, and the airport level is 4E, which can accommodate the take-off and landing of Boeing 747, Airbus and other large aircraft. It is one of the highest civil airports in the world. In 2007, the passenger throughput of Gongga Airport reached 1187104 people. On July 26, 2011, China Xizang Airlines officially launched its first flight from Lhasa to Ali. Xizang Airlines is mainly engaged in domestic air passenger and cargo transport business. Headquartered at Lhasa Gongga Airport, it is the first local base airline in Xizang and the first airline operating on the plateau in the world.

The Lhasa Nepal Pokhara international route has officially opened! On March 31, 2025, the route from Lhasa, Xizang Autonomous Region to Pokhara, Nepal will be officially opened.

As of 2022, the railways passing through Lhasa include the Qinghai Tibet Railway, Sichuan Tibet Railway, and Lhasa Rizhao Railway. The main railway stations include Lhasa Station, Lhasa South Station, Lhasa West Station, etc

The Qinghai Tibet Railway is a landmark project for China's implementation of the strategy of developing the western region, and one of the four major projects in the new century. It starts from Xining in Qinghai Province in the east and ends at Lhasa in Xizang in the west, with a total length of 1956 kilometers. Among them, the 814 kilometer section from Xining to Golmud was laid in 1979 and put into operation in 1984. The Golmud Lhasa section of the Qinghai Tibet Railway starts from Golmud City, Qinghai Province in the north, passes Nachitai, Wudaoliang, Tuotuo River and Yanshiping, crosses Tanggula Mountain, and then passes Anduo, Naqu, Dangxiong and Yangbajing of the Xizang Autonomous Region to Lhasa, with a total length of 1142 kilometers. Among them, 1110 kilometers of new lines were built and officially started construction on June 29, 2001. The Qinghai Tibet Railway is the highest and longest plateau railway in the world. It was officially opened for operation on July 1, 2006. The Lalin Railway, which passes through world-class scenery, drives the development of tourism along the line and threatens India by being close to southern Tibet

The Sichuan Tibet Railway includes three major sections: Chengkang Railway (Chengdu Kangding includes Chengya Railway and Yakang Railway), Kanglin Railway (Kangding Nyingchi), and Lalin Railway (Lhasa Nyingchi)
