Tongren, a prefecture level city under the jurisdiction of Guizhou Province, is located in the northeast of Guizhou Province, in the hinterland of the Wuling Mountains. It is adjacent to Zhijiang Dong Autonomous County in Huaihua City, Hunan Province to the east and Xiushan Tujia and Miao Autonomous County in Chongqing City to the north. 

History of Tongren

Tongren has a long history that can be traced back to the Neolithic Age. In the Qin Dynasty, it was located in the hinterland of Qianzhong Commandery. During the Han Dynasty, it was placed under the jurisdiction of Wuling County, and during the Shu Han period, a county seat was established. On October 22, 2011, the Tongren area was abolished as a prefecture level Tongren city and placed under the jurisdiction of Guizhou Province.

Geography of Tongren

Tongren City is located in the northeast of Guizhou Province, on the slope of the transition from the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau to the hills of western Hunan. Its terrain is high in the northwest and low in the southeast. On the mountain plain far from the river valley, there are many karst, hills, and depressions, and the ground is not very undulating. The entire area is mainly mountainous, with karst landforms. Fanjing Mountain has an altitude of 2572 meters and is the highest peak in Tongren City. The main rivers include the Wujiang River in the west and the Yuanjiang River in the east.

Tongren is located in the southeast edge of Fanjing Mountain, which is the main peak of the Wuling Mountains. Here, wonderful scenes of mountains, caves and hot springs are set together. Ridges and peaks gracefully run together and mountains and streams depend on each other for sustenance. Thus, it is no wonder that there are more than 40 scenic spots in this area. In addition to the well-known Fanjing Mountain and Jiulong Cave, there are many beautiful scenes which are rare in the world.

Climate & Weather of Tongren

Tongren City belongs to the subtropical humid climate zone, and the climate is significantly affected by the monsoon; Its basic climate characteristics are: variable spring temperature and more continuous rain; Summer is hot and sunny; The autumn temperature drops rapidly, and it is often cloudy and rainy; Winter is less severe and cold, with a longer frost free period.

Tourism of Tongren

Tongren City has 2 national nature reserves, 3 national scenic spots, 9 provincial-level scenic spots, 1 national mining park, and 1 national karst geological park. It is high in the northwest and low in the southeast, and the entire area of Tongren City is mainly mountainous. Fanjing Mountain is the main peak of the Wuling Mountains and was listed as a World Natural and Cultural Heritage in 2018. 

Tongren is also a multi-ethnic region containing many minority groups, with Miao, Tujia, Dong, Gelo, Man and others inhabiting here. Each year during the Spring Festival, many colorful folk dance performances can be seen in this area, such as Lantern, Tea Lights, and Dragon Light, as well as Playing Money Shot and Stilt.
