Wuhan is located at the intersection of the golden waterway of the Yangtze River and the main artery of the Beijing Guangzhou Railway. It has always been known as the "thoroughfare of nine provinces" and is the largest inland water, land, and air transportation hub in China. In 2009, the National Development and Reform Commission officially approved Wuhan as the first comprehensive transportation hub research pilot city in China. In December 2018, the National Development and Reform Commission and the Ministry of Transport issued the "National Logistics Hub Layout and Construction Plan", listing Wuhan as one of the five national logistics hub carrier cities, including land port type, port type, production service type, commercial service type, and airport type. In December 2021, the National Development and Reform Commission released the first batch of national logistics hub construction list for the 14th Five Year Plan, and Wuhan was approved to build a land port type national logistics hub.
Shipping
Wuhan is an important inland port in China, a shipping center in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River, and a designated hub port for water rail intermodal transportation by the Ministry of Transport. Wuhan is still the largest port of departure and arrival for inland rivers leading to the coast and near the ocean in China. The "river sea direct" route from Wuhan to Yangshan Port in Shanghai is the first high-quality route connecting the Yangtze River and the sea in the upper and middle reaches of the Yangtze River. Yangluo Port is the first and only port along the Yangtze River in China to implement a tax rebate policy for port of departure. In 2010, the throughput of Wuhan New Port exceeded 100 million tons, becoming the first "billion ton port" in the middle and upper reaches of the Yangtze River. In addition, Wuhan is also the headquarters of the Yangtze River Water Resources Commission, a dispatched agency that exercises water administrative functions in the Yangtze River Basin and the area west of the Lancang River (including the Lancang River), and is the largest inland shipbuilding production base in China. Wuhan Shipping Exchange is the fourth aviation exchange established in China after Shanghai, Chongqing, and Guangzhou.
Aviation
Wuhan Tianhe International Airport is located in Huangpi District, Wuhan City. It was opened on April 15, 1995 and is the first gateway airport and 4F level airport in central China. It is also one of the eight regional hub airports designated by the national public air transportation system in China. It is 26 kilometers away from the city center (Wuhan Yangtze River Bridge).
Railway
Wuhan is an important railway hub in China, located at the intersection of two national high-speed railway arteries, the Beijing Guangzhou high-speed railway and the Shanghai Chongqing Chengdu high-speed railway, as well as numerous conventional and intercity railways and connecting lines within the hub.
The Wuhan railway hub relies on well-developed stations and supporting facilities, a developed railway network, busy logistics flows, and huge passenger and freight flows to form a powerful railway hub system, becoming the fourth largest railway hub in China after the Beijing railway hub, Shanghai railway hub, and Guangzhou railway hub.
Wuhan is one of the six major railway passenger transportation centers in China, with a railway passenger volume second only to Beijing, Guangzhou, and Shanghai, ranking fourth in the country
