Tiger Leaping Gorge

Tiger Leaping Gorge is located halfway from Lijiang to Shangri La It takes two hours by car from Shangri La to Tiger Leaping Gorge Town. Tiger Leaping Gorge is one of the deepest and most beautiful canyons in China, and also one of the world's top ten classic hiking trails.

This canyon is located in the upper reaches of the Jinsha River and is divided into three sections: upper tiger jumping, middle tiger jumping, and lower tiger jumping. On the right side of the parking lot, there is a leaping stone tiger, with a base height of about 3 meters. This is the iconic stone carving shape for entering the Tiger Leaping Gorge.

Along the wooden steps, the steep cliffs on both sides tightly bind the flowing water, and the river rushes down like a fierce tiger roaring. This canyon is therefore called Tiger Leaping Canyon. The road here is very narrow, only cars from Shangri La to Shanghu Tiao can park. Both Zhonghu Jump and Xiahu Jump require tourists to hike.

Shanghu Tiao is the narrowest section of the canyon, located 9 kilometers away from Hutiaoxia Town. At the center of the river stands a giant rock, lying horizontally in the middle of the river, like a steep waterfall, splitting the rapids in half. The river water pours down from both sides, like a fierce tiger descending from the mountain. Legend has it that a fierce tiger once borrowed this huge rock in the middle of the river and jumped from the side of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain to Haba Snow Mountain, hence the name Tiger Jumping Stone.
