Yichang Overview


Yichang City, located in southwestern Hubei Province, lies at the junction of the upper and middle reaches of the Yangtze River, in the transition zone between the Wuling and Qinba Mountains in western Hubei and the Jianghan Plain. It "controls Sichuan and Bashu from above and draws in Jingxiang from below." Spanning 110°15' to 112°04' east longitude and 29°56' to 31°34' north latitude, it stretches 174.08 kilometers from east to west and 180.6 kilometers from north to south. It borders Jingzhou and Jingmen Cities to the east, Shimen County in Hunan Province to the south, Enshi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture to the west, and Shennongjia Forest District and Xiangyang City to the north. It covers a total area of 21,000 square kilometers. It has a subtropical humid monsoon climate with distinct four seasons, with warm and cold seasons and dry seasons occurring simultaneously. As of the end of 2023, Yichang City will administer five districts, three counties, and two autonomous counties, and will administer three county-level cities: Yiling District, Xiling District, Wujiagang District, Dianjun District, Xiaoting District, Yidu City, Zhijiang City, Dangyang City, Yuan'an County, Xingshan County, Zigui County, Changyang Tujia Autonomous County, and Wufeng Tujia Autonomous County. It has 24 sub-districts, 67 towns, and 19 townships. The Yichang Municipal People's Government is located at 102 Yanjiang Avenue, Xiling District. As of the end of 2023, the city's permanent population was 3.924 million.
