Yichang Port is one of China's 28 major inland ports. The mighty Yangtze River, after being accumulated into a high gorge and flat lake before the Three Gorges Dam, pours down, passes through the Gezhouba Dam, and exits the Xiling Gorge before flowing slowly through Yichang Port. Located at the dividing point between the middle and upper reaches of the Yangtze River, Yichang Port is situated between the central and western economic zones of China and is known as the "throat of Sichuan and Hubei."

On April 25, 2020, the "Yichang Port Master Plan (2035)" was officially approved by the Ministry of Transport and the People's Government of Hubei Province. The port area is divided into six main areas: the main city port area, the Zigui port area, the Xingshan port area, the Yidu port area, the Zhijiang port area, and the Changyang port area.
