Shanghai Railway Station was first built in 1908 and completed in 1909. The current Shanghai Railway Station was built in 1987 and rebuilt from the original Shanghai East Station. Under the jurisdiction of Shanghai Railway Bureau, it is one of the national railway hubs and a first-class railway passenger station. Adjacent to Shanghai Long Distance Passenger Terminal, it is known as the three major transportation hubs of Shanghai Railway, along with Shanghai South Railway Station and Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station.

The station hall design of Shanghai Railway Station adopts the scheme of "elevated waiting, north-south opening". Passengers can enter the station from two entrances in the north and south, while disembarking passengers can quickly exit the station through three exits, namely the southeast, southwest, and north exits, through underground passages. Shanghai Rail Transit Lines 1, 3, and 4 all pass through Shanghai Railway Station, so Shanghai Railway Station is also the name of the station for rail transit.
