History of Xiangxi
The territory of Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture belonged to Qianzhong Commandery Prefecture of Chu Kingdom in the Warring States Period(476BC-221BC). On August 1, 1952, with the approval of the Central People's Government, six counties were designated as Qiancheng, Fenghuang, Yongsui, Luxi, Guzhang, and Baojing to establish the Xiangxi Miao Autonomous Region (prefecture level). Topographic Features
Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture is located in Wuling Mountain area on the east side of the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau. The terrain is low in the southeast and high in the northwest. Wuling Mountain Range runs through the whole territory from northeast to southwest. The northern part is mountainous, with over 130 large and small peaks. Daling Mountain dominates the northern border, while Bamian Mountain, Lianhua Mountain, La'er Mountain, Spade Realm, Motianling Mountain and others rise at the southwestern Guizhou border. The highest peak of Daling Mountain is 1736 meters in Longshan County, and the lowest point is at the exit of Dalongxi, Shangbao Township, Luxi County, only 97.1 meters.

Hydrology of Xiangxi
The rivers in Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture belong to the Yangtze River basin. There are two main rivers, Yuanjiang (Yuan River) and Lishui (Li River). The southern source of Lishui River is located in Yongshun County. Youshui River, a tributary of Yuanjiang River, flows through Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture from Longshan Mountain. The Youshui River has many tributaries including Mengdong River flowing through Furong Town, Tuojiang River flowing through the ancient city of Phoenix, and Dong River flowing through Jishou.

Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture is a Human settlement of Tujia people and Miao, a National Cultural Ecosystem Conservation Areas of China, a national tourism demonstration area, and one of the birthplaces of Wuling culture.
